Heart tattoos have been a part of modern tattoo since the very beginning. Starting out with sailors getting tattoo hearts with little "Mom" banners on them way back during the Sailor Jerry tattoo time. This eventually led to WWII soilders going to a local tattoo shop to get a heart tattoo with their girlfirend's name on it before going to battle. This was a little memory they were able to take with them as they shipped off to war.

Today heart tattoos have become part of the new school tattoo style sometimes reffered to as West Coast tattoo style also. Which is known for it's use of traditional tattoo themes and designs yet using bright new and colorful inks. Things like nautical stars, pin up girl tattoos and so fort have all be redone in this new school tattoo style and look brighter and better then ever. Among these is the wildly popular heart tattoo.

The heart has been so prevelant within tattoos that today it is hard to nail it down to one specific meaning or symbol. It can represent a wide vareity of different things depending on the person that got the tattoo. It can represent anything from a person that you are really in romantic love with to a concept or value that you hold as improtant in your life. For example a heart with a dove or a heart breaking out of chains can easily represent freedom. So what do you want your heart tattoo to represent. Types Of Heart Tattoos

There ar a wide vareity of didferent heart tattoo designs that you might want to consider. Here are some of the most common.

Sacred Heart Tattoo - This is a Catholic symbol typically used in icongraphy and artistic representations of Jesus but can also be of Mary. The heart typically has a crown of thorns and a flame comming out the top. This is a very classic tattoo that many people love to get. Tpically it shows devotion.

Heart and Keys Tattoos - This is a great way for lvoers to express a more permentant and everylasting love iwthout having to have it lasered off later in life. One of the people in the relation ship gets a heart tattoo with a keyhold or opening in it. Then the other person gets the symbolic keys to unlock or open the heart. This is nice since there are no names attached.

Broken Heart - This unfortunetly is not one of the happiest of tattoos. Typically it is a symbol for urequitted love or in rememberance of a loved one. Often a date of the name of the lossed lvoed one is included.

Inscribed Heart - This is a simple heart design with a persons name added to it. What better way to express you love for someone then permenant ink! Might be better to wait until you ahve been married for many years before getting one of these.

Pierced Heart - This is heart tattoo design that incorporates an arrow or knife piercing through the heart. It can mean many different things and is often closley associated with the sacred heart also. Typically it is a symbol of some sturggle or suffering in life that a person has gone through. An arrow through the heart can often mean a sorrow or loss of love.

Anatomical Hearts- These a way more complicated designs and look more like a real heart then the shape we se everywhere on Valentines days. These typically represent a peron that has suffered from some sort of heart disease or faliure. They are sometimes stiched back up or even with band aids on them which represents the person has gotten better.

Celtic Heart Tattoo - These tattoos incorporate Celtic knotwork designs into the design of the heart.

Heart With Wings - These beautiful tattoos simply represent a free spirit. One that is free to fly and wander about.

Where you decide to get your tattoo is really up to you. However, belwo you will find some of the most common places.

Female Heart Tattoo Designs - Females tend to get heart tattoos ont heir chest most often. This provides a pretty big area for the tattoo and can still be easily covered if needed. Another place women will often get a heart tattoo is on their lower back and this is more typically done as a celtic heart tattoo.
