Magazine Rack For Bathroom

Let’s be honest everyone loves to read a good book or magazine in the bathroom right?  The only downside to this glorious reading time is the mess or pile of magazines and books that gets left on the bathroom counter or worse yet on top of the toilet.  It is unsightly and leaves a very cluttered feel to the bathroom.  However, there is a easy solution and that is to install a simple magazine rack for the bathroom.

Different Styles

Floor Sitting Models

Floor sitting models are the easiest to get started with.  They are super quick to install because all you have to do is purchase and then set on the floor near the toilet.  They are super easy to get and often inexpensive.  The ease of installation makes these a popular option for many wanting a quick solution.  The downsides are the housed reading materials can get wet from any water on the floor.  If the toilet overflows, or someone is extra messy when getting out of the shower (like my kids are) then the water can easily ruin the reading materials left on the floor.  Some of the floor baskets and magazine rack holders are lifted off the floor to get around this problem so if you choose this option look carefully.

Hanging From Toilet Models

Another option is to get a wire rack that hangs from the back of the toilet bowl.  These often have a clip or long hook that goes around the back of the toilet.  The good side is they are often very easy to install and super quick solution.  They are off the floor so you don’t have to worry about water damage.  Often they can also hold a few rolls of toilet paper as well making for a convenient storage solution.  The only downside to these is they are often not as strong or able to hold as many books as the installed wall mounted variety.

Wall Mounted Styles

Another third option and the definite luxury solution are wall mounted magazine racks for the bathroom.  These often are a little bit more expensive then the above to options and they also include a bit of hardware.  They have to be installed to the wall and this will take some basic knowledge.  Often it is only a matter of locating studs, drilling a hole or two and using a screwdriver.  This is pretty easy work and almost anyone with basic level knowledge can install a magazine rack.  The benefits are they are very sturdy and can hold a great number or books, magazines and newspapers.  They also give a more finished and complete look as if they were meant to be there and not done as an afterthought.

Materials To Look For

When you are looking at purchasing a magazine rack you will want to carefully consider the materials they are made of and how long they will last.  There are options including everything from wicker baskets, to wire frame all the way to wood versions.  What you choose really depends on the style of rack you are wanting to purchase.  Often the best and most finished option is to go with manufactured wood or wood composites.  There are many new wood looking materials that are composites of plastics but look and feel just like wood.  These will stand the test of time in the bathroom and not take a beating from the water and they look very finished.

Easy Installation

Installation of a wall mounted rack is really very simple.  You will need a stud finder, a level, a drill and a screwdriver.  Start by locating the studs in the wall.  With a stud finder you simple use it to find the studs for you.  Another low tech way is to knock on the wall in a horizontal pattern.  The wall will sound hollow in some places and then give a less hollow sound when you are tapping on the location of a stud.  This might take some practice so it can be helpful to use a small finishing nail to check.  Thus you make only a small little whole if you are wrong.  Once you locate the studs hold the magazine rack at the level that you want and using a level make sure it is straight and level.  Then mark where you want the holes to hold the magazine rack.  Next drill the holes and install using the screws that come with the rack and bingo you are done.
